October 2015

We have so much to be thankful for at Women In Action (WIA).  This time of year, as Thanksgiving approaches and the end of the year is near, we have a great opportunity to look back and reflect. WIA has found a new home which allows us the perfect space and location for our organization.  We have the generous support and commitment from our donors which makes our programs possible.  Our job every day is to work to provide services that support our fellow community members.  It doesn't get much better than that.

2016 will mark Women In Action’s 10th anniversary. We are thankful for all those that made this milestone possible. With a decade under our belt the word that comes to mind is CONTRIBUTE. Webster’s definition is to give something to help a person, group, cause, or organization; to help to cause something to happen. It is amazing what is possible when people come together and contribute. Thank you for contributing to our cause to make things happen!

WIA Relocates to New Office Space

Women In Action has found a new home! We are thrilled to announce that we have moved to a new office space and a location that is more private and also capable of accommodating both our community counseling and drug and alcohol counseling programs. Our office is very busy with a fair amount of traffic serving our counseling programs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays by our counseling programs, and Tuesdays and Fridays by Women In Action staff.   This new space gives us the privacy, convenience, and additional space that we need to continue to grow and manage our beneficial programs and operations.

Our new office is located at 47855 Gallatin Road, Unit #1, along highway 191 above the Grizzly Outfitters Fly Shop.

End of the Year Annual Appeal

It is that time of year again, where we look to our community supporters and those who believe in WIA's mission and scope, to help us continue our great work.  Expect to see our Annual Appeal that should be gracing your mailboxes in early November.  This appeal is critical to meet our fundraising goals and help complete our annual efforts for financial support so that our programs may continue to deliver benefits to the Big Sky Community.  Women in Actions' work would not be possible without  your generous support, so we ask that you please consider making a donation.  Any and all amounts help us to continue providing valuable programs in Big Sky.

WIA Golf Tournament a Huge Success

This year’s Par the Peaks was Women in Action's most successful fundraiser to date! We raised over $40,000 to help support our counseling and camp scholarship programs. We are incredibly grateful to all those who made this event possible.  A huge shout of gratitude to the Reserve at Moonlight Basin and the Moonlight Membership for allowing us the use of their spectacular golf course and facilities.  Our generous event and tee sponsors were instrumental in making this year such a huge success, and the variety of donations for prizes and giveaways rounded out a huge show of support from our many community partners.  Thank you to all who participated in sponsorship, and joined us in this event.

Event Sponsors:  Big Sky Build, Earth Elements, Moonlight Community Foundation

Tee Sponsors:  Ania Bulis/Christie's International Real Estate, Big Sky Sotheby's International Realty, Geyser Whitewater Expeditions, Highline Partners, Hungry Moose Market & Deli, Lone Peak Physical Therapy, reid Smith Architects, Security Title, Tom & Kay Reeves

Enrichment Program Brings Art, Learning to Big Sky's Kids

Entering its second year, Women in Action's Enrichment Program will provide funding that will bring the experience of art back to the children at Ophir School.  Through a program with Artsplot, students in grades K-5 at Ophir Elementary may enjoy the experience of art classes. This funding will support fundamental art education that includes grade appropriate activities in drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media, sculpture, and ceramics while incorporating art history, art appreciation, as well as a greater understanding of the properties of various art materials, music, and creative writing. Students will experience a wide range of subject matters, approaches, and methods.

Artsplot will illustrate the outcomes of this project through student's creative process of doing artwork while experiencing art lessons that increase skills, develop techniques, and build vocabulary, knowledge, and understanding. All of this leads to final pieces of artwork that demonstrate learning - a well rounded experience that Women in Action is thrilled to bring to the children in Big Sky.

Parent Liaison Program Continues to Make an Impact

The Parent Liaison program is an evidence informed program utilizing research that shows when schools are successful at increasing parent and family engagement, students’ attendance, academics and behaviors improve.  Research also indicates that increased parental knowledge of child development and parenting skills leads to improved parent-child communication, reduced youth substance abuse, and more effective parental monitoring and discipline.

The majority of the Parent Liaison’s time is spent providing one on one parenting support, identification and connection to resources in the school and community, and supporting the collaboration between parents, teachers, and the school for the shared goal of successful children.

The program provides the well-known Parenting the Love and Logic Way classes.  In addition to parenting classes, Thriving Kinders, Thriving Sixth Graders and Thriving Ninth Graders were presented to parents within the first month of school.  The Thriving series of workshops are classes for parents of children entering these transition grades and focus on child development, available resources in the school and community, and how parents can best set their children up for success in school.

We are excited to be working on our fourth school year of the Parent Liaison program in the Big Sky School District!
